Foreo Luna Review: Rethink Your Cleansing Routine!

Monday, July 29, 2013

Have you heard of the Foreo Luna? I hadn't until recently when I was approached by the company asking me to try the device for review. I have been using the device for three days and wanted to report on my experience because the website clearly states "See and feel the difference in just three days."

You know I am skeptical of statements like that, so I promised I would try it for three days and report here on the blog.

I thought this was just another $199 over-hyped product. After using the Clarisonic and not being impressed with it because it caused skin irritation and presents issues with hygience since bacteria can easily linger in the brush, even with regular washing. Since these devices are FOR BETTER CLEANSING, the type of cleansing method is of importance and nylon bristles and traditional brushes just are a breeding ground for germs when moist.

I had very low expectations of the Foreo Luna.  I figured it was just a newer version of the Clarisonic. NOPE. Not even close. This is a GREAT product!

For reference, I have been using this with a creamy face cleanser from Made from Earth, the Green Tea Toxin Cleanser. I have been alternating between this and a facial cleanser from JR Watkins. The Made from Earth is super gentle and creamy and I find that this type of cleanser is ideal for this device.

Here are my observations:

  • The Foreo Luna doesn't have traditional bristles. It has silicone "touch points."  These are waterproof and non-porous for very easy cleaning. This system is far more hygienic than similar cleansing devices.
  • I received the Luna for Sensitive/Normal Skin.  This is perfect for me.  Other choices include one for Combination Skin and one for Ultra-Sensitive Skin.
  • The Luna charges quickly and can hold a charge for up to 450 treatments.
  • You can use the Luna in the bath or shower. I use it morning and night. I wash my face in the shower in the morning and then again at night before bed.
  • My face is definitely cleaner using this as opposed to on my own.  How do I know? Typically, there will still be a small amount of my bronzer on my cotton ball after I use toner on my skin post-cleansing.  There is nothing left behind when I cleanse my skin with my Foreo Luna.
  • My skin is silky and soft to the touch after cleansing. It is also brighter, the same way it gets after I use a facial peel.
  • I can only speak for the cleansing aspects after 3 days.  There is another side of this device that is meant to be massaged over fine lines and wrinkles and ultimately deliver anti-aging benefits. I have been using this side, but it is only my third day, so I will definitely follow up.
  • Because of the level of cleansing achieved, I can use much less in terms of my night-time serum (currently using a newly released one from Seventh Generation that I was sent). Other products seem to absorb better.
  • My skin truly feels the way it does after having a spa facial.

Chic & Green Bottom Line

I love this product. I am so glad that I am using it because after three days, I DO see a difference in my skin. I will keep you updated after I have had the chance to use it more.

Do I recommend the Foreo Luna? Yes!

For more information on the Foreo Luna, please visit the Foreo website.  You can also find Foreo on Facebook and Twitter.

*I was sent the Foreo Luna for review consideration. I have not been compensated for this review and all opinions are my own.

Drugstore Skin Care: Yay or Nay?

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

I am sent several high end products to try each week. I have worked for brands with high-priced skin care. I have been given these products to use as part of my compensation. So why are about 75% of the products I am using on my face for skin care DRUGSTORE products? I will tell you why: BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST AS GOOD (in many cases)!

What is even better is that it is no longer impossible to find great quality drugstore products free of parabens and other nasty ingredients.

I switch around my brands quite a bit based on what I am reviewing, but when I sit here and think about what I am using right now, I have to share how affordable it can be to have great skin! Each product is under $20, with most being well under $10.

5 Facial Favorites

CLEANSER: J.R. Watkins Daily Facial Cleanser (I use this after I remove my makeup with olive oil.)
I recently rediscovered JR Watkins after having found my lemon lotion I had misplaced. Much to my surprise, they now have facial care products! This cleanser is truly a dream--it is gentle, removes makeup, and doesn't dry the skin.

TONER: Thayer's Cucumber and Aloe Alcohol Free Witch Hazel

I always go back to Thayer's. This toner is fragrance free, alcohol free, and oh so soothing on my sensitive skin!

MOISTURIZER: I have mentioned it before, and I will again-- (seed) Fragrance Free Healthy Hand Cream is my go-to product to use as a facial moisturizer--not just a hand cream!

I use this at night on my face and on my hands. I have been using this on my face for 3 or 4 years. I just love it!

EXFOLIANT: Alba Hawaiian Facial Mask with Papaya Enzyme

If you like the papaya enzyme products from Kiehl's, then you will love this. It tingles, but it truly works to slough off dead skin cells. Highly recommend this one!

EYE CREAM: 100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream

Again, a tried and true. I have strayed before, but always come back to this.  Plus, it smells heavenly!

C & G Says:

What matters most is not slick ad copy or fancy schmancy product packaging.  Ingredients matter more than anything else!

Help! I have stretch marks!

Friday, July 12, 2013

Stretch marks are one of the most common subjects that my readers ask me about. Stretch marks are often found around the breasts, upper thighs, abdomen, and hips.  They are hidden under our clothes, so why should it matter?  The truth is, we all want to have beautiful skin, whether it is so we can feel confident in swimwear or just feel happy when we look in the mirror. While you CANNOT completely erase stretch marks, these 5 natural ingredients may just help improve the look of your skin!

1. Vitamin E Oil

Many people may find fading of stretch marks by simply using the contents of a Vitamin E capsule. In fact, applying Vitamin E oil is one of the most recommended stretch mark remedies there is. While there isn’t any scientific evidence proving that it works, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence.  Just prick a capsule of this antioxidant-rich vitamin and apply to affected areas.

2. Cocoa Butter

Pure cocoa butter is an old stand by treatment.  Be careful not to buy “cocoa butter lotion”, which typically is water, fillers, and under 10% cocoa butter.  You want to be sure it is at least 50% cocoa butter. Apply directly to stretch marks for fading. Be sure it is petrochemical and paraben free, too!

3. Helichrysum Essential Oil

This lovely essential oil, when diluted in olive or grapeseed oil and massaged into the skin, works for many women to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.  The trick is to be sure that you are massaging it, not just quickly applying. You can find this less common essential oil online and at health foods stores. This is what I used after having Ben. It really did help, when diluted with grapeseed oil.

4. Coffee Scrub

This one is a simple remedy made from something you may have sitting in your coffee maker right now -- coffee grounds. Applying coffee grounds to your skin as an exfoliating body scrub may yield results when it comes to reducing the appearance of stretch marks.  Combine a small amount of warm water or aloe vera juice with a generous helping of coffee grounds and massage into skin. Caffeine revs up skin circulation and has been shown to make cellulite less visible--at least temporarily.  The same may apply to stretch marks. You can also look for s store bought coffee scrub. 100% Pure makes a lovely one called Cocoa Kona Coffee and it smells delish, too!

5. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is chock full of beneficial nutrients--from Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D to Vitamins A & E. Avocado oil contains plant strerols, which have been shown to help repair scarring and pigmentation spots. It may even help to boost collagen.  Using this oil as a body massage oil each day may help to reduce the visible signs of stretch marks. Look for this right in the natural foods section of your local grocery store.

Chic & Green's Acne Guide

Thursday, July 11, 2013

Of all of the skin care questions readers have asked me over the years, "What can I do about my acne?" seems to be the most popular. I am very fortunate never to have personally battled acne, other than the very rare hormonal zit that will pop up and last a day or so. As a teen, I did get a couple on my forehead from time to time, but I am really lucky never to have had to endure what so many women and men have to battle each day.

When I was working as a skin care specialist, makeup artist, and when I had my skin care line, acne was probably one of the greatest concerns I saw with clients and customers. Battling acne can have such a profound effect on a person's self esteem. I sometimes think people do not realize that. Acne is visible and if it is severe (or when it leads to acne scars), it can drive people to want to seek hope in every "miracle" product and treatment out there.

First of all, let's dispel some myths about acne. Do you remember being a teenager and being told that chocolate and greasy foods trigger acne. That is not true. People also would be given the advice that if you had acne, your face wasn't clean enough. So many people over-cleanse in the attempt to remove the "dirty" oils that people often think cause breakouts. Just because you have acne doesn't mean your face isn't clean. That is another myth.

People with acne have pores that become blocked with sebum. This trapped oil eventually develops bacteria and results in breakouts. One can have different kinds of acne from the sore red pimples (inflammatory) to blackheads & whiteheads (non-inflammatory and AKA comedones) and the little white dots called milia.

There are some steps that I recommend to treat acne safely and gently:

1. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser without fragrance or even essential oils. Part of the problem is that people wash their faces with harsh, detergent cleansers with the hope of drying out the acne. This is not what will happen. Fragrance may also be contributing to those breakouts. Plus, you don't want to get the essential oils or fragrance in your eyes.

2. You also will want to gently remove any traces of cleanser with a very gentle and natural toner. Look for products free of alcohol.

3. Next, you need to exfoliate. I don't recommend manual exfoliants such as scrubs for those with severe acne. The most effective oil soluble exfoliant is beta-hydroxy acid (BHA or salicylic acid). There are many skincare products with BHA on the market now. Just be careful to choose a concentration of 1% or 2% based on your particular skin type. Please note that pregnant women should NOT use this ingredient.

You have to "de-gunk" those pores or you will never get rid of the acne. Be patient, it may take a good 2-3 weeks to see any changes.

4. Now, one area where there is debate can be whether or not to use benzoyl peroxide to disinfect the skin. My answer is a very quick and certain NO. This is not a safe ingredient. Just look at its rating on the Cosmetics Database. Did you know that BP is actually 70% benzene and 20-30% Toluene. (Source: US Dispensatory)? Talk abotu toxic! I recommend Tea Tree Oil. It is a pure essential oil with scientific research behind it to show that the results of using are similar to using BP. It is wonderful for oily skin, is antibacterial and helps to dissolve oils. You can add this to grapeseed oil to use as your moisturizer. I also have used a couple drops of the oil right on acne spots. It helps with breakouts just as effectively as harsh chemically-derived ingredients, too!

5. Moisturize. Like I just mentioned above, adding a bit of tea tree oil to non-greasy grapeseed oil is a good way to nourish the skin and combat acne. Jojoba oil is another option. While some people don't always have the best results with jojoba, I have seen it work wonders. Jojoba Oil is wonderful for the skin because it mimics your skin's own sebum, drawing excess oil out. Jojoba oil is pure and it is natural. I use only 100% pure and organic golden jojoba oil. This oil is hydrating without being greasy. It will not promote acne or aggravate an existing case of acne. You can buy this in many grocery stores or online venues with natural products.

Patience is needed when it comes to treating your acne. Trying something two or three times isn't going to work. You really need to stick with your routine for a few weeks. It may take that long to start getting rid of that acne. I know it is hard, but regular and consistent use is imperative.

I am also going to say that if the acne is severe with no signs of improvement, that a trip to the dermatologist may be needed. There are some prescription options out there that may ultimately be the best choice for you if nothing else works.

For those with mild acne, there are some at home remedies you can try.

A simple green tea & vinegar toner recipe:

Get a sterile bottle or jar.

Boil some distilled water (at the grocery store you can find a gallon for under $1) and pour 1 cup of water into a mug. Add 3 green tea bags. Steep for 5 minutes. Remove bags and cool for until it's lukewarm.

Pour into a sterile bottle or jar. Add in 2-3 T. of apple cider vinegar (I prefer raw and unfiltered, but any will work), a squeeze each of lemon juice and honey. Shake to combine. Store in fridge.

Use daily after cleansing.

Acne Scar Help:

A concoction of tomato paste & cucumbers

It sounds a bit like a vegetable salad, doesn't it? With daily use, this duo can help to fade acne scars over time.

How does it work?

Cucumber is extremely soothing. Possessing toning qualities, applying cucumber can help to calm and revitalize the skin. We all know how cucumber slices applied to the eyes can reduce puffiness, right? The same effect works when mashed cucumber (or by simply applying sliced cukes) is applied to the skin. Cucumbers can reduce inflammation and help to fade sacne scars with regular use.

I like to combine this with antioxidant tomatoes. For this, buy a small jar of tomato paste at the grocery store. I think tomatoes are one of the most underrated skin foods out there. A recent study in Great Britain showed that regular consumption of lycopene-rich tomatoes (specifically paste) can help protect skin from UVA damage as well as prevent premature aging. The tomato paste also helps to absorb excess sebum. In addition, when combined with cucumber, slight skin lightening can occur. This is how the cuke-tomato cocktail can help to treat and fade acne scars.

When starting out with this all-natural treatment, I'd try a patch test first (as with any product). If it doesn't irritate, start with a small amount daily. Apply to cleansed skin and let sit for 10 minutes or so. Rinse with tepid water. You should start to see results within 2 weeks of regular use.

Strawberry Face Mask Recipe

Your makeup has just as much impact on skin as anything else. It is crucial to pay attention to what is in your makeup. It's also important to note that hair products can worsen acne if you have bangs or hair that touches against the face.

Some acne contributing and irritating ingredients to avoid if you see these on a product label:

Red dyes
Petroleum-based products
Hydrogentated ___ oils
Isopropyl Myristate
Butyl Stearate
Cetearyl Alcohol + Ceteareth 20
Isocetyl Stearate
Isopropyl Linolate
Octyl Stearate
Laureth____ ingredients
Propylene Glycol Monostearate
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

I also want to mention that it's important to make sure your makeup brushes and sponges are always clean. Bacteria and oils get trapped in the bristles and you will be applying them right back into your face with each use if they are not clean.

Do you have a skin care concern? Let me know and I just might tackle it here on the blog.

10 Bits of Randomness

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Hey there--it has been a LOOOONG time since I've done my "bits of randomness." How about 10 Bits of Randomness this humid Tuesday afternoon-

1. I do not watch that much television, but I can say that "Breaking Bad" is the best tv show in the history of television and I am counting down until it returns August 11.

2. I am not "a gamer" either. A few times a year, I challenge Tom to Jeopardy on the Wii or some trivia games on Sporcle, but that is it. Or it was...until I discovered Candy Crush Saga. You will find me playing it on my phone late at night or very early in the morning.

3. While I like a nice glass of red wine, I would much prefer a beer any day. I love craft beers. I love the banana bread beer at the Old Toad on Alexander Street, as well as locally brewed beer from Rohrbach. At Wegmans, I love to buy the Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager, although I usually go with the Michelob Ultra since it only has 2 grams of carbs.

4. Dresses--I love them. Last week, I hit a milestone -- TWENTY FIVE pounds lost. Yay! 25! To treat myself, I bought 5 new summer dresses-- two maxi dresses, 2 tee shirt dresses, and a high low dress. When it is hot and sticky, it is SO easy to be girly by tossing on a dress. Did I mention they were ALL on sale/clearance/or had a coupon? Yep--5 new summer dresses for under $85! For name brands....

5. I have been drinking one gallon per day of Arizona Unsweetened Brewed Iced Tea. Perhaps it is a caffeine overload! But I love it...

6. Can I just tell you how much I love the Goddess Salad Dressing at Trader Joe's? I do. It is one reason I am happily able to eat two big salads with my lunch and dinner. If you have ever had the Tahini Yogurt dressing at Aladdin's here in the Rochester area, I can tell you that this dressing tastes very similar.

7. I would be lost without my beloved tortoise tone sunglasses. #1, they were just 10 bucks at Target and #2, they are just "me."

8. Why is there an egg on this desk? This wasn't planned for #8, but I just noticed there is an egg near me. I blog out at the table on our porch--did *I* set the egg here for some reason and forget about it? Did one of the boys? Hmm....a mystery!

9. Am I too old to learn karate? Nick just started last week and I REALLY think I would enjoy it. Something to think about....

10. Lastly, I want to thank you all for reading C & G over these past six years. I really feel like I am chatting with you all over a cup of coffee when I type--having a chat about skincare and makeup (or cute things on Etsy) with my friends. Thank you for that.

Let's Celebrate With a Jane Iredale Giveaway

Monday, July 8, 2013

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Chic & Green.  It's hard to believe but my little blog just turned SIX. When I started this blog, Ben was 2 and he was in diapers. My Nick was not yet in preschool.

Now it's off to lacrosse, soccer, karate, tennis, and other big boy things.

Thank you so much to my beautiful readers, old & new, for following along.

To celebrate CHIC & GREEN's 6th birthday, I thought a fab giveaway would be in order!

You all know how I simply adore Jane Iredale. From your emails and comments on social media, many of you do as well. I use an average of 3 to 5 Jane Iredale products per day because I love them so much, so JANE IREDALE is going to be the sponsor of this sweet little treat for three of my blog readers.

And what a lovely giveaway we have!

Three lucky blog readers will receive a travel beauty bag filled with deluxe sizes of Jane Iredale products, including my favorite sunless tanner, TANTASIA, Powder-Me SPF , Lip Drink SPF 15 Lip Balm, and the refreshing Pommist Hydration Spray!

Two Minute Makeover Monday!

Monday, July 1, 2013

Summer's humidity is in full swing here in Upstate New York. So are camp, lacrosse, soccer practice, karate, swimming, work, vacation prep, etc.

It seems like I am ten times busier in the summer than any other time of year, so I like to save time in every way possible.

Today I would like to show you an easy peasy on-the-run makeup look that will take you less than 2 minutes.  I promise! I am showing you pictures of me from today. See how I look at 8am? I have brows to work on, uneven tone, freckles, etc. We all do!

Here are the products I used this morning--

*Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Primer & Brightener

*Jane Iredale Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer in Medium

*W3LL PEOPLE Narcissist Stick Concealer & Foundation in Narcissist 2 (used as concealer)

*Jane Iredale Powder Me SPF in Golden

*W3LL PEOPLE Hedonist Bronzer in Medium

*It Cosmetics YLBB Waterproof Nude Light/Medium Lip Liner Stain

*It Cosmetics Lip Flush Butter Gloss in Naturally Pretty

*Silk Naturals Brow Cream in Medium Ash applied with Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Angled Brow Brush

*Jane Iredale Longest Lash Mascara (I use one light coat).

I just happened to receive a lovely box full of new products from It Cosmetics, so I decided to try out the lippies. I ABSOLUTELY must recommend the Vitality Lip Flush Butter Gloss! Now, I NEVER, EVER use lip liner. Ever.

However, included in my box was the YLBB Waterproof Nude Lip Liner in Light/Medium. I gently colored it in my lips ad used it as a base for my lip gloss. I applied my lip gloss at 8am. The photo above was taken at 1pm. In between, I had two cups of coffee, a smoothie, water, iced tea, and a salad. It is still on my lips!

Now, I am as pale as Casper the Friendly Ghost. We all know this....but in the summer, I want a TAN. One without the sun. One that won't make me ORANGE. I have been using Tantasia from Jane Iredale twice a week and each day, I have been sweeping W3LL PEOPLE's Hedonist Bronzer in Medium all over my face and neck.

I also have to tell you about a NEW product (to me) that I am just madly in love with. It is called Powder Me SPF in Golden and it is by Jane Iredale. I have it in Golden and it gives me a hint of color, so I use this right over my tinted moisturizer It is broad spectrum SPF 30 and it WORKS. I no longer have to use a separate facial sunscreen, because I layer this over my Dream Tint (SPF 15). I love this formula for the face. My only gripe is that the packaging isn't so good and leads to product waste (a bunch of powder spilled out all over my vanity when I opened it). Packaging issues are a common complaint about this product on the Jane Iredale site, so I do hope they can fix the problem.

So, this is what I have used. It took me under two minutes. I timed myself and it took me a minute and 43 seconds to do my face today.

Best of all, it won't melt off!
