Seventh Generation Gives Your Skin a Boost

Thursday, August 29, 2013

We all know and love Seventh Generation for their safe, eco-friendly home care products. Now the company has recently launched some wonderful facial serums at an affordable price.

Over the course of the past couple months, I have had the pleasure of trying out two different products in the Boost line: the Revitalizing and the Firming Boost.

Just what exactly is a Boost? Seventh Generation has created a line of natural, antioxidant-rich skin oils free of harmful chemicals and artificial fragrances -- and these oil-based serums can help every skin type. There is a Boost in the line for every skin concern.

My two tried & tested Boosts:

Revitalizing - This one is a blend of oils including Tamanu and Rosehip. It helped to soften and brighten my skin and is recommended for treating fine lines and wrinkles, as well as giving tired looking skin a "boost".  I found that its main benefit to my own skin was that it really helped to soften it. It's a nice hydrator for normal to dry skin.

Firming -  This was my clear favorite of the two I tried! This serum contains Baobab oil and Brown Algae. While I really liked the Revitalizing, this one had several benefits: skin appears plumper, softer, AND brighter. It has given it more of a glow as well. This Seventh Generation Boost rivals high end brightening serums at a fraction of the cost. I strongly recommend this product!

Boosts are available at Walgreens and retail for $13.99.

Take the quiz to determine which Boost is right for you.

5 Bits of Randomness: Rochester Edition

Monday, August 26, 2013

Yesterday was my birthday. I am 38 -- and I can honestly say that this is one of my most favorite ages to be. I feel fabulous. I have more energy and confidence than I did at 28, and I am just comfortable with myself and where I am in this beautiful life.

Tom gave me a wonderful gift this weekend-- a weekend away for a bit of R & R. We didn't even leave the area since we just returned from 8 days in Florida, but it was A-mazing.

I'd like to share 5 local favorite things with you from my weekend--

We went to the gorgeous Inn on Broadway in the city.  The inn was the former University Club, and it has been beautifully restored and is just an elegant inn with outstanding service and accommodations.  It was perfect for a romantic weekend away. The inn is just around the corner from coffee shops, restaurants, and more. I loved the fact that we were across from a very old church.  The churchbells were beautiful to listen to!

We also went to the Tavern 58 at Gibbs, which is near Eastman Theater. Dinner was incredible. I had the surf & turf, which was a filet with lump crab stuffed shrimp. DELICIOUS. The Espresso martini was a delight, too! This is a very quaint and rustic place-- and Melissa, our server, was top notch. They even brought us complimentary champagne garnished with strawberries when they found out we were celebrating my birthday.

What a nice surprise to see a friend while we were leaving Tavern 58! Heather Saffer, winner of "Cupcake Wars" on the Food Network and former cupcake baker turned frosting line owner and author was there. Speaking of Heather, she has a new book! You can head over to Amazon or Barnes & Noble to buy The Dollop Book of Frosting: Sweet and Savory Icings, Spreads, Meringues, and Ganaches for Dessert and Beyond. The book, which I am ordering this week, features all sorts of neat recipes. Heather's line of gluten free, all-natural frosting is also available in select stores. CONGRATS on the new book!

Another little local stop was to the Culver Road Armory to go to Alex and Ani. Ben wanted to give me something Yankees related for my birthday, so Tom told him he would pick something out. Above is the Yankee Stadium bangle in Russian silver. I LOVE Alex and Ani and this was a fun little stop on Saturday.

On the way home, we stopped at Irondequoit's new gem, Atlas Eats, for a piece of birthday carrot cake to have for later. Delicious! If you have not been to Atlas Eats, do yourself a favor and go! They are located at the corner of Rawlinson and N. Clinton and if you're in my neighborhood, you can easily walk or bike on over. They are open Thursday through Sunday. I've been there for breakfast as well and can highly recommend it!

Trendspotting: Beauty Edition

Like hairstyles and skirt length, skin care trends come and go. As we continue on through 2013, I hope some of the latest skin care trends are here to stay.

Just what are the top 10 skin care trends of 2013?  Let’s take a look.

1.  An increase in organic and natural products

Each year we see an increase in the number of “natural” skin care brands.  Traditional skin care brands have jumped on the bandwagon, removing controversial ingredients and adding in those sourced naturally.  As people become even more health conscious, this trend is likely to continue on the upswing. I do have hope that this trend will continue--and I also hope that there will be more regulation in terms of product claims and maybe even more FDA involvement to keep products safe!

2. Less in-office procedures

With the widespread interest in natural ingredients comes a greater interest in taking the natural approach to aging. Women are showing a greater interest in treatment skin care items such as serums and other anti-aging products and are making fewer trips for Botox and other treatments done at the dermatologist’s office. And I am SO happy about this. I am not an advocate of in-office procedures and injectibles, so this makes me happy.

3. More active ingredients

What are active ingredients?  Unlike preservatives and fillers found in skin care products, actives are ingredients that are biologically active and tend to show more dramatic results. Active ingredients actually have a purpose and can alter skin cells. As more actives are added to products, we’ll begin to see even more dramatic anti-aging results from products alone.

4. The nail craze

Just look at the explosion of manicure photos on Instagram and Pinterest and you’ll see that the nail care trend of 2012 is only growing.  From gel manicures to nail decals and polish strips, beautiful nails are a trend I think is here to stay. Having your nails done is a great (and temporary) way to express yourself and it truly is an affordable luxury.

5. CC creams

2012 was the year of the BB creams and 2013 is shaping up to be all about the influx of CC creams. CC cream, or Color Control cream, is made to help camouflage discolorations such as age spots and hyperpigmentation. CC creams act as a primer and sheer tint in one, while helping hide acne scars, too. It is hard to say at this point whether they will achieve the fame of BB creams, but this trend is definitely gaining in popularity.

6. Serums, serums everywhere

Once just reserved for a more mature population, anti-aging serums are a major trend in prevention for those in their 20’s. The newer crop of serums for the younger set features antioxidants and oils known not to cause acne breakouts. Serums with jojoba oil, safflower oil, and grapeseed oil are of particular benefit for those trying to avoid breakouts while enjoying the benefits of age prevention.

7. More gizmos

Handy tools are becoming mainstream when it comes to skin care. From deep cleansing tools and acne treatment devices to home diamond peel microdermabrasion systems, these tools provide you with cutting edge technology in the privacy of your own home. My top pick for at-home facial tools is the Foreo Luna, which I told you about a couple of weeks back.

8. Better drugstore options

Once upon a time, women had to splurge on high end products to get results. Then when it came to natural beauty products, there really was nothing effective in a budget price range. That is not the case anymore. Drugstore brands are getting better and better, many of them offering the same technology and active ingredients as boutique brands.  This means that better skin care is more accessible to the masses, and I surely hope this trend is here to stay.

9. DIY Beauty

Thanks to Pinterest and, ahem, some lovely beauty blogs, do it yourself recipes for beauty products are a very popular trend. Women are increasingly budget and health conscious and DIY beauty is the best of both of these worlds.  In the kitchen skin care offers women fresh ingredients and convenience--with very little risk.

10. Spa quality home hair removal systems

One of the biggest trends we are seeing is women skipping the medi-spa for laser treatments in favor of at home laser and IPL hair removal. And why shouldn’t we?  At just a fraction of the cost of professional laser hair removal sessions, home hair systems from Tria Laser and Silk’n are very effective over time and offer women complete privacy.
